Pitch

Planting wild flowers along roadways would provide more food for honeybees increasing their chances for survival.

Description

Summary

Honeybees are vital to the production of food in our world.  In recent years many factors have lead to a great reduction in the number of bee hives.  One factor that has contributed to the decline in the bee population is the lack of flowering plants to provide yearround food for the bees.   Bees are only able to travel about a few miles from their hives to gather food.
As farms have grown larger, the margins around fields where wildflowers grow have grown smaller.  These margins along roadways have also been reduced by the practice of mowing the median strip between roads.  If states and towns were to plant wildflowers along these strips, and reduce the area that is mowed on a regular basis, the bees would have better access to a year round supply of food, helping to ensure the hive's survival.  Reducing mowing would also reduce maintenance costs and fuel costs.
