On October 22, 2012, Thomas W. Malone, John Sterman, Jason Jay, and Robert Laubacher of MIT led a Sloan Innovation Period (SIP) class entitled “The Climate CoLab: Working with People from All Over the World to Address Climate Change.” In the class, students generated a series of initial ideas for selected Climate CoLab contests, voted on the ones they liked best, and then created proposals in the CoLab based on the top-ranked ideas. The initial ideas generated for the “Local solutions” contest were: - Elementary education programs that use games to change family habits - Incentives for recycling, specifically around formalization of the occupation of waste picker - Programs that aware ecopoints at the city level for individuals and organizations that adopt sustainable practices - Allowing individuals to adopt and name newly planted trees to create a strong emotional connection - Tax the use of disposable cups and bags and provide rebates for returning/reusing them The education idea was then developed by the student into a draft proposal, Elementary and Middle School Education: https://www.climatecolab.org/web/guest/plans/-/plans/contestId/13/planId/1000601
