Pitch

Block sunlight from thawing arctic ice and permafrost.

Description

Summary

Lower amount of sunlight reaching arctic ice and permafrost to slow methane emissions. Do this from space with strategically spun and orbited blocking surfaces.

Use thin opaque film to block sunlight from space. They would orbit from pole to pole and rotate with a maximum blocking angle over arctic areas. They could be framed and adusjtments would be infreaquent and require very little energy. A possible way to save on framing material might be to use centrifugal force  by having the flat sheets spin in their own plane to keep them spread out.

Category of the action

Geoengineering

What actions do you propose?

Who will take these actions?

Where will these actions be taken?

What are other key benefits?

Add economies of scale to orbital space transport industry.

What are the proposal’s costs?

High, but since this is climate, they could be amortised over a long period.
