Updated Content for this Proposal Experts, judges, supporters, and readers, We sincerely regret having made a mistake when uploading this proposal. Because Google Docs was recently blocked in China, many versions of the proposal were created by our team members during the process of drafting. The current content under section 2.3 is actually our latest version of "2.2 Economic and Political", and our section 2.3 should have looked like the paragraphs attached below. We promise that these were created and finalized before the deadline. We again apologize for our negligently uploading the proposal. ------------------------------------ 2.3 Social and Behavioral Changes Social and behavioral changes play an crucial role in reducing emissions. Without a "green" social change, the effectiveness of technology development and policies will be limited. Consequently, it is essential to lead the society to a "green" life. First, to help new technology receive wide acceptance from the public, education about new green technology is needed. New inventions should be introduced to the public in time to expedite this process. This task is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students who are enthusiastic in environmental protection and familiar with new technologies. For example, the Student Green Association of Tsinghua University has a Department of Green Education. They undertake the education work in elementary schools and commuties. Their major work is to advocate benefits of new energy such as solar, wind and tides. By doing so, a lot of people get intrigued in green technologies who will in turn become more likely to support green development. Secondly, a policy is meaningless without support from the public. A public consensus that favors green policies will provide huge incentives for policymakers, companies, and organizations to adopting such policies. Therefore, actions should get all the public involved in solving climate change problems. Media plays important role in propagating economic and political policies about reducing emission. New media such as twitter and facebook make it convenient for everyone to establish their opinions and the ideas from the public will be beneficial for policy makers to revise the rules and laws. For example, a new benzene factory, which pollutes heavily, was scheduled to be constructed in X, China. However, the citizens of X objected to this plan unanimously on the BBS. At last, this plan was cancelled, reflecting the power of the new media of the Internet. Groups are usually far more powerful than individuals. Groups can carry out the green work like tree planting and waste recycling more effectively. And, people tend to be more willing to follow decisions of a group instead of an individual. Consequently, social and behavioral changes could be practiced by a group initially, and the influence of this big group would educate people to behave more "greenly".
